THE BIBLE IS A CODE BOOK, TO GIVE GOD'S SECRETS TO THE GODLY, BUT TO DENY THEM TO THE WORLDLY-WISE

1. The secret of the Higher Life is in Separation from this world, its motive drives, interests, joy
2. Christ does not wish us to withdraw from the world and our contacts with the people- all kinds
3. But Jesus prayed for us to other-worldly, kept from the Evil One, and changed by His Word;

If we fail to understand what He wants of us in this- we defeat His prayer-crush His heart

I.- THE CHRISTIAN IS IN THE WORLD v. 11b

When Christ sought us, and saved us- we were very much in the world- some of world's worst sinners

A.- WE ARE PLUCKED AS "BRANDS FROM THE BURNING" AND GIVEN TO CHRIST "OUT OF THE WORLD" John 17:6b

1. The World (Kosmos) means this World system- ruled by its God- selfishness, ambition, pleasure
2. We used to be "children of this world"- Eph 2:1-3 -But God called us, many answered- came to Jesus
3. When we come to Jesus and are Saved- We need to seek those things above- Col 3:1-3

B.- BUT WE ARE YET VERY MUCH "IN" THIS WORLD, FOR OUR HABITATION, AND OUR MISSION IS HERE - V.11

1. The Medieval Christians often fled to a monastery- Nunnery- to escape the World- took it with them
2. The Reformation Christians sought to establish God's Kingdom -cf. Geneva -But Jesus not there
3. They both missed the Great Commission- and the Parable of Salt and its Savor - mystery hidden

C.- WE ARE NOW IN A WORLD THAT IS VERY STRANGE AND ALIEN TO US, BUT WE HAVE A PURPOSE HERE!

1. Jesus warned His own that the World would hate them- v.14, and we put our feelings on our sleeve?
2. People in the World cannot understand our motive, our change of life, our mission- new joy.
3. Hebrews 11 tells of the struggle of Men of God in a strange world - here for a purpose

If you are a Christian, do not flee the purpose for which God placed you in this World!

II.- THE CHRISTIAN IS NOT OF THIS WORLD v. 16a

The Christian is to be different- and Separation is vital as a part of God's plan for our joy

A.- AS CHILDREN OF GOD, WE ARE PILGRIMS AND STRANGERS, EVEN IN THAT WHICH IS OUR INHERITANCE!

1. We are forbidden to seclude ourselves- but we are now so different the World cannot hold us
2. As Abraham- Heb 11:9- was a sojourner even in His land of Promise- As Israel today struggles
3. Every step he took- he was looking for a city- v.10 -so he walked by Faith, tested & tried

B.- HOW CAN WE ESCAPE THE CORRUPTION THAT IS IN THE WORLD WHEN IT TOUCHES US EVERY MOMENT?

1. Our Daily Prayer should be- "Lord, Deliver us from Evil"- External can be washed- but Internal?
2. Moses refused to be called the Son of Pharaoh's Daughter Heb 11:24- for a joy set before him
3. He was perfected through suffering- and he missed the Promised Land here- but has it forever

C.- DO YOU HAVE A CHANGE IN YOUR HEART THAT PLACES A STRANGE PULL OF ANOTHER WORLD ON YOU?

1. You are bought with a price,- You are the Temple of God- Present your bodies -living sacrifice
2. If you still have the World's language, fashions, pleasures, and pet sins- check up II Cor 13
3. If you a re saved, yet worldly- this means you are carnal- I Cor 3:1 -Salt without savor

America needs a revival of a godly difference between the Sacred and Secular- Separation

III.- JESUS PRAYED "KEEP THEM FROM EVIL" v.15b

The Evil One seeks to entangle us again in his web of influence, Use us, abuse us, destroy us

A.- THE EVIL ONE SEEKS TO SIFT AND TEMPT YOU- SO THAT YOU WILL BETRAY CHRIST, ANDYOURSELF

1. All our temptations come from World, flesh, & Devil - So guard against these in your life
2. Too many comforts, luxuries, and pleasures -and we find ourselves with Property of Evil One
3. If you place too high a value on this World's goods- you defeat Christ's prayer in your life

B.- JESUS PAYED, SANCTIFY THEM THROUGH THY TRUTH: THY WORD IS TRUTH v. 17

1. To Sanctify means to cleanse- and It is God's Word that cleanses past sins, & future- Seek it
2. Spend Time in the Word- for it is your open window into the next world- fill mind with good
3. Soon we will start BMA again- if World crowds out your time- the Word is ineffective for you

C. JESUS PRAYED" FOR THOSE WHO SHALL BELIEVE ON ME THROUGH THEIR WORD" v. 20

1. The World has changed- New tricks- Alcohol, tobacco, TV, Movies, Radio, Wealth- & Madison Ave.-
2. But Faith in Christ still changes lives- & Holy Spirit guides men's minds- If you trust Him
3. The Lord has sent you into the World- v.18- Not easy, but a blessing, your purpose in Life

Jesus sends us as Ambassadors- II Cor 5:25 to seek and save the Lost - fight His battles

EVEN THOUGH JESUS HAS GIVEN YOU SOMETHING GREATER THAN THIS WORLD, HE HAS SENT YOU BACK AS HIS AMBASSADORS

1. If you are a native of just this world- with all its evils- why not Accept Christ today!
2. If you are too worldly for Christ to use you- why not let Him change your heart today
3. If you belong to Jesus- let Him use you as an example, an ambassador, or invading army.-

THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST IN GETHSEMANE ARE MYSTERIOUS AND AWE-INSPIRING, IN THAT BEAUTIFUL GARDEN

1. No passage in the Bible is more mysterious - We must approach it with a holy reverence, worship
2. I preached - 11-3-63 with emphasis on bur betrayal of the Lord with indifference, unfaithfulness
3. But today- emphasis on the actual suffering- and our own Gethsemane; where we bear sorrow ourselves the Sorrow that must fall into every life- will you pray God's Will- or flee it? 

I.- YESTERDAY'S DISCIPLES SLEPT AS JESUS PRAYED!

It was across the brook Kidron-"Dusky, Gloomy" (John 18:1) David crossed this brook, weeping!

A.- "TARRY YE HERE, AND WATCH WITH ME ONE HOUR" Matt 26:28 "WHILE I GO A WAYS AND PRAY"

1. He took Peter, James, John a little farther - Are you close enough to share the heart of God?
2. He expressed to them - "My Soul is Exceeding Sorrowful- Tarry Ye Here" -I go farther
3. What was Jesus Sorrowful about? Scripture does not say! -What did He want of these? Sympathy?

B.- "SIMON PETER, SLEEPEST THOU?  COULDEST THOU NOT WATCH WITH ME ONE HOUR? v. 37b-stinging rebuke

1. To sleep is a sinless imperfection - human weakness, but sometimes it can be deadly, dangerous
2. But in this case it but added to the sorrow of Jesus - Whatever He expected- they failed Him
3. Jesus was deserted in His time of need- II Tim 2:13 -"but he abides faithful", he does not desert them

C.- "SLEEP ON NOW, TAKE YOUR REST, IT IS ENOUGH! --- THE HOUR IS COME! BEHOLD!" v. 41

1. Jesus sweat great drops of blood- Luke 22:44 He agonized while the Disciples slept
2. Three times He went to pray- 3 times came back and found them asleep. He was refreshed-
3. The Plan of God rolled on- He no longer needed their help, He faced his Gethsemane & went forward

After the Temptation struggle- Angels came and ministered; but here, Judas came

II. TODAY GETHSEMANE IS OURS !

It was then a fenced-in orchard, with an olive press; Men toiled, and the olive was crushed, and in the crushing it gave light 

A.- "INTO EVERY LIFE A LITTLE SORROW MUST FALL" - A GREAT QUOTATION FROM SOMEWHERE - YOU KNOW?

1. Some today are Epicureans-Total pursuit of pleasure, fun, happiness! Sorrow, Sadness a bad thing
2. Our Luxuries have made us forget the normal worries of life, normal sorrows- so we have others
3. Our unnatural worries- leave us incapable of handling sorrow- turn to drink, dope, escape pains

B.- CHRIST IS OUR EXAMPLE - MENTAL TRIALS CAN BE TURNED TO BLESSING IF WE ARE FAITHFUL TO GOD!

1. Some have an inward conflict that precedes any new work or development - spirit willing, flesh weak 
2. There are times of doubt- when our lack of faith in God's Goodness when we have troubles rushes in
3. Also- separate from doubt, some people have seasons of despair of Soul- deep depression- Do You?

C.- IF WE DO NOT CROSS KIDRON TO OUR GETHSEMANE OCCASIONALLY, WE WILL INVENT OUR OWN GETHSEMANE

1. Sorrow has a work- If there is no Gethsemane, then we can have no cross, no resurrection
2. There is no birth without travail, -yet women yearn for this grand adventure- shadow for life
3. Jess Moody said "Every Sermon must have some of your blood in it" But I don't like to bleed!

Our Generation has tranquilized itself out of its agony- so no births, no revivals, no joy

III.- WILL YOU SLEEP THROUGH YOUR GETHSEMANE ? ?

The Disciples did not know the seriousness of the moment- they missed something very wonderful!

A.- OUR COUNTRY HAS BEEN TAKING LIFE TOO EASILY, NO SACRIFICE, NO WILLING SORROW - CHANGE OR DIE!

1. Discipline has broken down, "Don't think bad of anyone ",-yet $$ goes up, no one to sacrifice
2. We have to have a great time -All of the time- be entertained - no time for bearing burdens
3. We are heading into another Dark age- because men won't be faithful- to watch & pray!

B.- OUR CHURCH HAS CAUGHT THE SPIRIT OF THE AGE, AND WE TOO WANT THINGS TOO EASY - NO AGONY!

1. We have slacked in discipline -Waste time running to Fountain, Bathroom, Recess - Miss time with the Lord
2. Growth comes from sacrificial contacts- Who will bear agony of asking people to come to church?
3. Many of our most loved people take the church for granted- and sleep! We need Revival of agony

C.- DO YOU HAVE FAITH ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THE TRAVAIL IS WORTH IT TO BRING FORTH NEW LIFE? NEW JOY? 

1. II Cor.7:9-10 -No sorrow, no repentance, no salvation?  A Doctor hurts to heal, Preacher too?
2. Revival comes to a family when someone pays the price- A Deacon praying, A man faithful to Revival
3. Watch-"You can see farther through a tear than a Telescope" & Pray - but it's hard work 

Job's counselors today are just the opposite -Eat, Drink, be merry- tomorrow it costs more!

CAN YOU BEAR THE DISCOMFORT TO WATCH WITH JESUS JUST AN HOUR?  EVEN A LITTLE LATE AFTER CHURCH?

1. Let Godly Sorrow bring you to Jesus- He will comfort you, forgive you, heal you-
2. Bear a Burden for someone else - how long has it been since you cared enough to cry for another?
3. Even though it takes some suffering- Let's take our church forward for the Lord- Pray, work

THIS VERSE HAS OFTEN BEEN MISUSED BY THE LIBERALS, IGNORED BY THE FUNAMENTALISTS, AND MISSED BY US

1. When the Liberal wants to lure us into a bear trap he quotes this- and baits it with sweets!
2. When the Fundamentalist wants to split a church he ignores this & hurts body of Christ
3. May God give us an "understanding of the times" and "What Men ought to do" as David's might

The Tender portion of love expressed by our Lord must not be misused or ignored!

I.- THE UNITY IS A SPECIAL KIND!

Throughout this prayer this unity is with Christ and the Father - not with each other apart from them

A.- THIS UNITY STARTS WITH A REAL SALVATION EXPERIENCE WITH JESUS CHRIST, ETERNAL LIFE! 17:2,3

1. There are many facets to our faith- Jesus died, arose, ascended, coming again- Dispensation, Judgments,-
2. You can't wait to know it all until you are saved- but it is all a part of God's Word!
3. When you accept Christ- you become accepted in the Beloved- & should believe all truth-

B.- AFTER SALVATION COMES A REAL UNITY WITH THE BODY OF CHRIST - THE LOCAL CHURCH RIGHT HERE

1. Some want freedom from responsibility- of local church- so miss growth, fellowship, discipline
2. We have many offices in our church-Pastors, Deacons, etc.- Pew warmers -all are important!
3. But when we are all functioning under leadership of Christ- we are His body-doing His work

C.- THIS UNITY WITH GOD, AND WITH EACH OTHER IS FUNCTIONAL AS WELL AS SPIRITUAL - IT WORKS!

1. This unity is expressed in Eph 4:3-6,7,11-16 and you are important to this body!
2. This unity is spiritual Phil 2:2-5, like minded with Christ! 1st! Then with each other
3. But each person still is an individual- like flowers in a bouquet glorifying God- Complimenting each other

As I John 1:7- If we walk in His light- together with Him- we find ourselves with each other

II.- WHAT ABOUT UNITY IN EVANGELISM?

Evangelism is close to the heart of every Believer- but a new kind of unity is asked-

A.- THERE HAVE BEEN MANY ATTEMPTS AT BRINGING ALL THE CHURCHES TOGETHER - ECUMENICALISM

1. The Federal Council of Churches-(Com); American Council; now Arizona Ecumenical Council -all left wing
2. A new thrust- Ken Duplesey- Unity around Charismatic Gift- Tongues; Dr. Epp warns of new Unity
3. And now a new one-"Key 73" -Let's get together for Evangelism! -And more barriers broken

B.- THE THEME OF KEY 73 IS THAT IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT BE BELIEVE, LET'S GET TOGETHER!

1. Dr. Raedeke was clear- "Do your own thing-, your way, share, simultaneous, together,-
2. Dr. Outen (Methodist) -"To protest war- that's evangelism!"- Open housing, combat racism, Political
3. They have their thing OK- and have dead churches - Key 73 is a mixed multitude -strange mix

C.- AS SOME OF YOU HAVE NOTICED, KEY 73 WILL BE OUR NEIGHBOR NEXT FRI AND SAT - BUT NOT OUR PARTY

1. The Clinic on Evangelism at St. Gregory's Catholic Church - Dr. Ed Hill, Elvis Priest, not me
2. Dr. Culver Nelson has expressed doubts about the format -"Which Jesus will be presented?"
3. Marvin Rickard- of Joan & Milt Davis's church -"We cannot give up our convictions to join"

If we can't win souls because we love the Lord- joining their "movement" won't help us

III.- WHAT ABOUT OUR OWN EVANGELISM CONFERENCE ??

We have for years held conferences on Church building, Bible Teaching, Evangelism

A.- WE HAVE A DOCTRINAL UNITY, AND A UNITY ON WHAT WE MEAN ABOUT SOULWINNING! -NEED HELP IN METHODS

1. Our people are sometimes ashamed of Baptist, Conservative, AB Convention, -but We are brethren
2. We join together for instruction- & to do things we can't do separately- Missions, Camps, Training
3. But Evangelism- the New birth is like 1st birth- very personal- One person loving another

B.- WE NEED A BURDEN FOR NEW SOULS, THE PURPOSE OF OUR UNITY v. 21 -THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE

1. Each church is autonomous, each Christian is an individual, but Our Unity must be with Christ
2. Some are more successful in winning Souls than others- let's learn from them! Avoid mistakes
3. If you want to see this church grow in spirit and numbers- be at Conference

C.- IF YOU HAVE NEVER WON A SOUL TO CHRIST, YOU HAVE MISSED WHAT JESUS IS TALKING ABOUT - v.22,3 

1. The purpose of human life, love, courtship, marriage,- is REPRODUCTION -commanded of God!
2. The purpose of Spiritual life is also love, winning people to Jesus, -Spirit-reproduction!
3. There is much for you to learn -Attend Conference- but ONLY JESUS CAN GIVE YOU THE LOVE - HEART!

We have too much playing around -not enough drawing people -making them one in Christ!

DO YOU HAVE UNITY WITH CHRIST OR MAN? DO YOU HAVE THE JOY OF UNITING SOMEONE ELSE WITH CHRIST?

1. Only by being Born again can you have unity with Christ, -and the Father!
2. Only in bringing someone else to Christ can you have unity with them- in Christ!
3. For all of man's plans- fun and games - I Cor 16:22 - "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema;
Accursed"

Maranatha!  Our Lord cometh!

THERE IS AN AUTOMATIC EVIL IN THE HEART OF MAN THAT CAUSES HIM TO BETRAY AND ATTACK GOD'S ONLY SON!

1. Jesus had been praying, Disciples sleeping; and He woke them up to face the greater betrayal!
2. Harmonies of the Gospels disagree in Sequence of Events- so follow with me in your Bible-
3. Many Pastors are preaching on Fulfilled Prophecy today- But what a time to study the matter of betrayal - as our nation might well be getting the kiss of death mid Our Lord's Agony

I.- A GREAT MULTITUDE WITH SWORDS AND STAVES 43

Gethsemane was won- after a brief rest- the next step of agony of betrayal, then Calvary -for me

A.- THE BIBLE RECORDS THAT A VERY GREAT MULTITUDE CAME OUT AGAINST JESUS-Matt 26:47 - WHO WERE THEY?

1. John 18:3 describes Soldiers, Officers of the High Priest, and of course the curious followers
2. They had been searching for Jesus- The Upper Room-(Mark followed) -then to Gethsemane-
3. They came with Torches and lanterns- Could be seen and heard for long time Events cast shadows

B.- SOME CARRIED SWORDS - THESE WERE THE SOLDIERS BELONGING TO PILATE'S ANTONIO FORTRESS BY TEMPLE

1. The Priests had no police authority- they had to turn to the near fortress for armed men
2. The Sword represented the organized World Empire- Almost always against Jesus; like Armageddon
3. Roman Law placed Military under authority of the Civil Government- sometimes very corrupt

C.- SOME CARRIED STAVES - THESE WERE THE CIVILIANS, AND FOLLOWERS WHO CAME AS PART OF A MOB

1. There is always a mob following every excitement- & so today, they chase fire engines- fickle
2. Some of same group may have cried Hosanna a week earlier- but now they grabbed sticks and came
3. Normally a Jewish Mob would have been against the Soldiers- but allies against God's Son

And so today- Jesus is being betrayed by Civil authority, curious citizens, who know not God

II. BUT ONE BETRAYED WITH A KISS v. 44

Jesus went out to meet the mob,- with his disciples trailing, later scattered- he faced the world

A.- JUDAS HAS ARRANGED A SIGNAL - v.44 - HE WOULD BETRAY JESUS TO THE AUTHORITIES WITH A KISS

1. The Orientals were more demonstrative than we - a Holy Kiss upon the cheek a common greeting
2. But to use a kiss as betrayal- earned the title of the most hideous deed perpetrated by man
3. Many today are betrayed in public and private- by the symbol of love and affection- Weigh value

B.- JUDAS GREETED JESUS BY CRYING "HAIL, RABBI - MASTER" see Matt 26:49 & Mark 14:45-

1. The greeting is in itself hypocritical- Scofield points out Judas never called Jesus- Lord!
2. Some today want the acclaim of the organized church- but do anything to keep from calling Him Lord
3. Some blame the Judas' of today for their lack of faith in Jesus- don't reject the Lord!

C.- JUDAS GREETED JESUS & JESUS ASKED HIM, "JUDAS, BETRAYEST THOU THE SON OF MAN WITH A KISS?" -Luke 22:48

1. The sharpest words of Jesus- reaching into the heart of the matter- if Judah had a heart
2. It is in the very act of pretended love that real evil condemns itself- & God knows hearts
3. We need a kiss for the Lord- "Kiss the Son lest He be angry" Psa 2 but with sincerity

As the foolish disciples of yore- we still let the hypocrite show more love than we do! 

III. JESUS SAID "I AM HE!" John 18:5

Robertson places John's part before Judas' kiss- but I think it came later! - after rebuke of Judas

A.- I BELIEVE JESUS TURNED FROM THE REBUKED JUDAS, AND ASKED THE MOB, "WHOM SEEK YE"? John 18:5

1. The mob knew who they sought- and answered- Jesus of Galilee- hot knowing Him as Lord! World-
2. When Jesus answered them "I am He"- v.6- they fell to ground!  There is a reason for that -
3. Mankind will fall prostrate before His feet again- Today we have choice- later, every knee-

B.- JESUS GAVE HIMSELF TO THEM, ASKING ONLY THAT HIS FRIENDS WITH HIM BE NOT ARRESTED! v.8

1. God has his divine plan, and He is working it out! - Man's wrath even is made to fit into it
2. God is allowing men to play the part of the fool today- drawing this age into focus for Armageddon
3. The World still grabs at Christians- Matt 14:50-52 - and we still run away

C.- JESUS WILL AGAIN COME TO THE EARTH AND SAY "I AM HE" AND MEN WILL LISTEN- Exo 3:14- I AM

1. If you are tired of this world's betrayal, and need a Savior, Listen- Jesus says- "I Am He"
2. Soon such anguish- that Christians will cry out- Who will save us from agony?  Jesus- "I am He"
3. At Armageddon both foolish sides against God- cry who will win- "Jesus will cry - "I am He"

Unless your heart is tender and close to Jesus- you will betray Him as they did long ago.-

WILL YOU JOIN THE WORLD WITH SWORDS AND STAVES, OR WITH JUDAS WITH HYPOCRITCAL KISSES?-

1. Quit trusting the Political world, or the Mob World- trust Jesus Christ as your Savior
2. Quit running like the early apostles- take your stand with Jesus Christ - Savior & Lord
3. The practical obedience of Baptism, Church Membership, spiritual service - yours to decide
