Gen 33:1-11

I HAVE ENOUGH

Sept. 28, 1969 pm

IT IS A RARE THING TO MEET A MAN WHO HAS ENOUGH, AND HERE WE SEE TWO SUCH MEN

  • These two men are twins, but totally different, yet they both have enough of this world's goods
  • One of life's greatest problems comes from anxious care, desire, hunger for things - deadly
  • When I preached on this on 5/11/47 I must not have been content - got married 18 days later.

But there is something we can learn from the saved and unsaved alike in this area

I. AN UNGODLY MAN WHO HAS ENOUGH  Gen 33:9

Because Esau had other faults, there was no need for him to be grasping or unwise

A. THE UNGODLY MAN IS OFTEN A DISSATISFIED PERSON AND EASY PREY FOR SATANIC ARROWS

  • The heart of the carnal man, like a drunkard- tends to never be satisfied
  • The curse of our age is goods, pleasures, grasping, grabbing, lustful wickedness
  • The rich man would pull down his barns and grasp for more- Luke 12:16-

B. BUT SOMETIMES AN UNGODLY MAN WILL HAVE ENOUGH, AND HAVE WISDOM TO BE CONTENT

  • Because he is lazy - no ambition - lacks energy - some are content in the gutter -
  • Because he is of an easy disposition - normal work brings enough- easily pleased - Esau here?
  • Sometimes because of enough wisdom of this world they know truth of scripture - I Tim 6:9

C. THIS CONTENTMENT HAS ITS GOOD POINTS, BUT ITS DANGERS AS WELL

  • It prevents greed, oppression that comes from greed, and the grasping troubles that follow
  • It promotes good natured liberality live and let live viewpoint- even generous giving
  • But it can be deadly- some men have enough - quit seeking, and if they quit before finding Jesus, they miss the greatest joy of this life and all of the life to come.

II. A GODLY MAN WHO HAS ENOUGH  Gen 33:11

There is no greater joy than being blessed, and knowing it - some don't

A. IT'S A PITY THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE OF EVERY MAN WHO NAMES THE NAME OF JESUS AS LORD AND SAVIOUR

  • Some are too eager for this world's wealth - no separation from worldliness- its sin, and stain
  • Worldly cravings cause undue care, anxiety, envy of things, jealousy, leanness of soul
  • Demas forsook Paul, for he loved this present world - II Tim 4:10, cares of this world starve out the good seed-

B. TO HAVE ENOUGH IS A DELIGHT THAT LEADS TO THE BLESSING OF SHARING

  • Contentment surpasses riches - I Tim 6:6
  • A person with such contentment is one who will share with another-
  • The Puritan preacher thanked God for scouring land and sea - one herring, and one potato - shared

C. ONE IS DOUBLY BLESSED WHEN HE KNOWS HIS BLESSINGS COME FROM THE LORD GOD

  • Jacob said- God has been good - Gen 33:11
  • Contentment comes from within the heart, and is the key to all thankfulness
  • To have God for our portion is all sufficient -

Two angels- one ruling the nation, one sweeping streets- both would be content

III. CONTENTMENT CAN BE FOUND IN JESUS

The kind of contentment that we need can only be found in Jesus Christ- all other is deadly

A. GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT IS GREAT GAIN - AND WE NEED TO SEEK THIS - I Tim 6:6-12

  • This does not destroy godly ambition, but it destroys greed and lust
  • We need to place our values in the right area- and balance spiritual and material prosperity
  • Work as hard for godliness as you do for daily luxury and you will indeed be blessed

B. WE NEED TO LEARN CONTENTMENT AS PAUL LEARNED IT - Phil 4:11-13

  • He found self-sufficiency in Christ - not foolish boasting - but reality in Jesus
  • His hunger- when the way was rough, he found Jesus enough - a crust and Jesus is wealth untold
  • His being full- we need to turn from our self-satisfaction to Jesus, rejoicing in His goodness

C. OUR CONTENTMENT MUST CENTER IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST - AND WE MUST DRINK OF HIS JOY

  • The world cries- come to me and have fun- Jesus says- "take My yoke upon you and learn of Me"
  • But in Jesus we find we can be sufficient and triumphant - I Cor 2:16-17
  • Never rest until you have all that the Lord has for you, - the Holy Spirit leadership - souls

Never be dissatisfied when you have the Lord

TWO STRONG MEN FOUND PEACE AND JOY WHEN THEY HAD ENOUGH - WILL YOU FIND ENOUGH IN JESUS?

  • When you come to Jesus, just as you are, then Jesus can cleanse you, and fill you-
  • Claim all that Jesus has for you, and become very ambitious - in Jesus, for souls -
  • Let the Lord make you sufficient, and content.
