I & II Peter

THE TRIAL OF FAITH

Nov. 19, 1967 pm

Read I Peter 1:1-9 & Pray

WE HAVE A HARD TIME REMEMBERING THAT THIS IS A HOSTILE WORLD, AND WE ARE STRANGERS AND PILGRIMS

The loving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ saves us from the wrath caused by our sinfulness. Then we seem to think that we are to be at home in the world, but we face a hostile world. Not only is God's grace sufficient for us, the hostility of the world will help cleanse our hearts and souls if we will keep the right attitude in the struggle.

I. THE TRIAL OF OUR FAITH  I Peter 1:7 ff

I Peter tells us how the Saints are to suffer- and that the suffering has a cleansing power

A. HOW REDEMPTION AND NEW BIRTH SHOULD GIVE US CONFIDENCE THAT WE CANNOT FAIL Chapter 1

  • The trial of our faith will work the glory of Christ (7), faith is not seeing, but believing (8)
  • We have not been redeemed by corruptible things- but the Blood of Christ- (18, 19)
  • Our birth is not of corruptible seed, but by the word of God (23,5) So love one another (22)

B. OUR GROWTH SHOULD BE WITHOUT STOPPING, AND OUR WORSHIP AND WALK AS A ROYAL PRIEST Chapter 2

  • Since we are born, then to grow, we need milk- the milk of the Word. Feast on it and grow (v.2)
  • We are as priests- chosen of God (v.9) and as strangers & pilgrims be warned of war (11)
  • We will face persecution- (20) but face it in the example of Christ (21). We are His sheep

C. WE FACE A FIERY TRIAL, AND IT OUGHT NOT TO TAKE US BY SURPRISE Chapter 4

  • We need to arm ourselves with the mind of Christ (1). He suffered, and we are not better than Him.
  • Any fiery trial should not be strange (12), but we ought to rejoice (13)- Attitude
  • With judgment and trial facing everybody, we win out because our soul belongs to Him (19)

D. FOR ALL CHRISTIANS, AND ESPECIALLY THOSE IN CHRISTIAN SERVICE * BE FAITHFUL, JESUS IS COMING Chapter 5

  • Pastors are to feed the flock, and the chief shepherd will have the reward (2-4)
  • All of us must be clothed with humility - our greatest armor - for He careth for you (5-8)
  • Part of our reward on this earth is to be stablished, etc. - after suffering a while (10)

II. HOW THE SAINTS ARE TO FIGHT APOSTACY II Peter

II Peter tells us of the responsibilities of Grace, not passive, but fighting apostacy

A. BRETHREN, MAKE YOUR CALLING AND ELECTION SURE Chapter 1, cf v.10 Diligence not to fail

  • Our faith stands on the scriptures, not men's fables, but God's written and spoken word (16, 7)
  • We have a more sure word of Prophecy- the Day Star arisen within our hearts- (19)
  • As in I Peter we have faith with a spiritual eye, guided by Holy Spirit, not men (21)

B. BUT LEST WE BECOME OVERCONFIDENT, A WARNING AGAINST FALSE TEACHERS AND APOSTATES Chapter 2 (v.1)

  • We might not be able to divide men's hearts, but the Lord knows which are which (v9
  • Some are so terrible that they destroy and corrupt all they contact (v17-19) Cf Jude 12-
  • Some are the scoffers of the last days- walking after their own lusts- (2,3) See them today?

C. WE CAN FACE THE APOSTACY WITH COURAGE, FOR JESUS IS COMING BACK TO EARTH Chapter 3

  • Men do not understand God's patience, and count His longsuffering and His death (v4,9)
  • But the Day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night- Final judgment and end (10)
  • We know these things, what kind of a person ought we to be? (11) Faith & Hope & Diligence

With all these things known to us, we should grow in Grace and Knowledge of our Lord (18)

GOD HAS SAVED US, AND EQUIPPED US, BUT WILL WE HAVE THE COURAGE TO DO HIS WILL?

Some are not even willing to make sure of their calling and election- Salvation

Some are not even willing to take the path of blessedness as pilgrims- Victory

But we know the truth, and the future- if we do not well we cannot escape the full responsibility for our sinfulness!
