Lamentations 3:22,3

THE LORD'S MERCIES

Oct. 29, 1967 am

LAMENTATIONS IS AN ACROSTIC DIRGE, OF JUDGMENT, DESTRUCTION, DEATH AND CATASTROPHE

God had endured Israel's sin as long as He could, He turned her over to the tormentors in the midst of the destruction- a poem of sorrow; In the midst of the poem- a ray of hope . We have taken for granted God's mercy that we have grown unthankful- in the day the rainbow is beautiful, but common- but the night as soon upon us- we need to know the value- mercy.

I. A WARNING FROM GOD

As God warned Noah- Genesis 6 three, so he warned Moses- Deut. 28:15 ff- and he warns us!

A. GOD'S HAND FINALLY FELL UPON HIS OWN PEOPLE

  • After many generations Jerusalem sinned away her day of grace- Lam. 1:1 God turned from her.
  • He cast off His altar- 2:7, and fulfilled His word- 3:17, finally the promised doom came!
  • The nation had been divided, conquered, ravaged, and its survivors carried away as slaves

B. THOUGH THIS HAPPENED THROUGHOUT HISTORY, WE SEEM TO THINK WE CAN AVOID OUR DOOM

  • We get philosophical, and argue whether or not to blame God for the results of our sin.
  • Some blame or credit God with every accident, natural or special judgment, or evil thing.
  • Sometimes God judges, sometimes withdraws his fatherly protection and Satan or nature does. Sometimes men cause things.

C. THE FACT IS, WE HAVE EARNED THE IMPENDING CATASTROPHE AND DEVASTATION THAT HANGS OVER US

  • Nothing but the Lord's mercies keeps back a nuclear war, bacteriological war, black plague?
  • With riot and murder on every hand- when will your path cross that of a killer, or vandal?
  • With 1,000 a week dying in auto massacre, what guarantee that you will get home today?
  • What of oppression? - 450 years since reformation, our freedoms held lightly, for granted?
  • What of natural calamities?

II. THE HOPE OF MERCY FROM GOD

The picture of hope still shines even in the midst of danger, or after the worst happens

A. "IT IS OF THE LORD'S MERCIES THAT WE ARE NOT CONSUMED" Lam 3:22, "New every morning," v. 23

  • Jeremiah had seen his nation ravaged, his King's eyes gouged out and drug away captive
  • In the midst of it all, he realized that God is still on his throne, and had spared him.
  • When you look for God's mercies and claim them- they are renewed every morning- V. 23

B. "HE DOES NOT AFFLICT WILLINGLY, OR GRIEVE THE CHILDREN OF MEN." Lam 3:33

  • He does not willingly crush (34), turn aside the right of (35), or subvert (36)
  • Why does a man complain for the punishment of his sins? v. 39 man, not God caused it!
  • Surely if Israel earned its judgment, we also have, God has warned us, and someday- 2:17

C. "LET US SEARCH AND TRY OUR WAYS, AND TURN AGAIN TO THE LORD" Lam 3:40, 41

  • We need to stop blaming others for our accidents / judgment- we blame God, society, parents ,
  • We will never learn from life till we search our own hearts, and find the sin that is there.
  • Then we need to turn to God, lift our hands to Him- Psalms 103:17- mercy for those who fear
  • Mercy is available, but we either take it for granted, or refuse to believe it exists.

III. THE FACT OF THE MERCY OF GOD

Even in the 10 Commandments it states that God shows his mercy to thousands- Exo 20:6

A. WHAT IS THIS MERCY THAT WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT? Ephesians 2:4 says God is rich in mercy-

  • The Bible ties mercy and peace together- peace is the trust and rest found in the heart of man-
  • But mercy- Heb- hesed, Greek- helos - is God's act of kindness toward those in distress.
  • God delights in mercy, and delights in those who show mercy, but many men reject it

B. HOW CAN WE OBTAIN MERCY FROM A GOD WHO IS ALSO ADJUST- God has provided a way.

  • Luke 1:50 tells of God's mercy toward those who fear him- the fear is a respect, trust,
  • Heb. 4:16 tells us to come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and need.
  • Titus 3:5 tells us that according to His mercy He saved us-- through Jesus Christ.

C. THE ONLY WAY TO CLAIM AND OBTAIN MERCY IS THROUGH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

  • If you reject the atoning death of Christ on Calvary- God has no other provision to save you
  • If you do not want God's mercy, or want to argue about how He made it available- take wrath
  • There is no way you can avoid the natural tragedies of life and death - life is but a smoke- so make sure that you have availed yourself of all the mercy that you can claim !

FACE THE FACT OF OUR PERSONAL, AND OUR NATIONAL, NEED, AND LAY HOLD OF THE MERCY SEAT

Recognize your sin, and its impending judgment, as well as nature's cruelty and ultimate death

Turn to God through Jesus Christ and find mercy moment by moment, and rejoice in it.

Claim the promises of God, and by his mercies submit yourself completely to him.
