A DAY FOR BUILDING

May 2, 1971 am

ECC 3:1-8 SOLOMON SAID - A TIME TO LOVE, HATE, WAR, PEACE, AND TO BUILD UP - HOW TO KNOW THE TIME?

  • In harmony of I Sam, II King, and I and II Chron - we see God's use of men - one of war and another of peace.
  • We need to be aware of difference in immediate goals and long range ones, and not be confused!
  • Our faith in the soon return of Christ should not keep us from long range work plans - using our gifts for His glory -

Ready now and faithful in continuing with Him!  No confusion or doubt.

DAVID COULD NOT BUILD - FOR HE WAS A MAN OF WAR

David was a man after God's own heart - he brought the nation together - yet he was limited!

DAVID WANTED TO BUILD THE HOUSE OF GOD, FOR HE LOVED THE LORD, AND WANTED THE BEST FOR HIM!  II SAM

  • He had the ark brought into Jerusalem, even leading the procession himself - praising God - Ch.6
  • He was bothered because his own house was finished, and God's was not - II Sam 7:2 need this!
  • Nathan told him - "Go, do, the Lord is with thee" - but not always is the prophet of God right!

BUT GOD WOULD NOT LET DAVID BUILD THE TEMPLE, FOR HE WAS A MAN OF WAR, II SAM 7:4 - I CHRON 17

  • Even after Nathan had told David to go ahead, God spoke to him at night - told him his Son was to build - v.13
  • God's reason- David was a man of war - I Chron 22:8, 28:3 - BUT PLEASE - nothing dishonorable here!
  • God reminded David of His great love - I Chr. 17:1 - from sheepcote to throne - NOTE I Ch.17:10b

DAVID WAS REJECTED, BUT HE DID NOT POUT, HE STARTED PREPARATION FOR HIS SON ANYWAY.

  • David bought Mt. Moriah - I Chron 21 - see II Sam 24:18 - because of his sin, he saw the Angel of the Lord
  • He would not accept the site without paying for it - we need to learn v.24 and make it real today.
  • David gathered the materials - I Chron 22:1-5, and set up the organization of workers and priests.

We need to prayerfully study our talents and gifts, claim all God has for us, but force none!

SOLOMON WAS BORN TO BUILD - EVEN THOUGH HE WAS ALSO A SINNER

When a job needs to be done, God sends along the right man as His gift to the Church - use him!

SOLOMON WAS COMMANDED AND TRAINED BY DAVID TO BUILD THE TEMPLE, AND TOLD MANY TIMES I CHRON 22:6-19

  • David must have repeated this many times to Solomon - we need repetition too - what is Your job?
  • David must have prayed much and dreamt of his son's success - I Chron 22:12
  • Solomon was plainly told that his heart must be right and be of a willing mind - 89:9 - You too.

GOD SPOKE TO SOLOMON ABOUT THE BUILDING TOO, AND WE MUST EACH HAVE GOD'S PERSONAL GUILDANCE

  • God wanted Solomon to walk in His statutes, execute judgments, keep commandments.
  • He spent 13 years on his house I Ki 7:1, and only 7 years on the Temple I Ki 6:38 - but did well.
  • In spite of all his wisdom, scripture writing, temple building, remember - he sinned - I Ki 3:3

BUILDING THE TEMPLE OF GOD TOOK TIME, AND GREAT ORGANIZATION, FEW MEN HAVE FAITHFULNESS TO DO IT

  • Many chapters cover the organization of workers - and bringing of materials - I Chron 23-27.
  • Nations involved in building, and many orders of priests in service - II Chron 2-5
  • Anything large accomplished for God takes time, prayer, work, and organization - note I Chron 26:18

We each need to seek the items of service and carry our end of the work - faithfully!

GOD INHABITED THE BUILDING - AND HIS PRESENCE MADE IT THE TEMPLE

We can build buildings, but only love can make a home!  And only God's special presence - a church!

PREPARATION WAS MADE FOR THE GREAT OPENING DAY OF THE LORD'S TEMPLE, SPECIAL PREPARATION, TOO.

  • After all the cost in building, there was a great preparation - sacrifice - II Chron 7:5
  • Solomon had a brazen scaffold in the midst of the court - II Chron 6:13 and he knelt -
  • He prayed, and asked the Lord to make the place a special place of prayer II Chron 6:40-42

THE GLORY OF THE LORD FILLED THE TEMPLE, FIRE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN AND DEVOURED THE SACRIFICE

  • The priests could not stand to minister in the temple - II Chron 5:14 the Glory was so great!
  • Fire came down II Chron 7:1 - when God's people all meet, prayed up, ready - things happen!
  • There were 8 days in this great celebration - praising God for His mercy, seeking His love.

THE LORD SPOKE TO SOLOMON AND GAVE TO HIM THE SECRET OF REVIVAL, PERSONAL AND NATIONAL

  • II Chron 7:12 - I have heard, and chosen this place - but!  - v.13 If I judge-
  • The formula for revival - v.14 still works, either personal or national.
  • God is watching and listening - v.15 - but will He hear you?  Has He spoken to you this day?

The purpose of this building is also in God's plan - easier to hear Him here - will you?

GOD HAS A PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE, AND HE WANTS YOU TO FULFILL IT.  WILL YOU BE WILLING?

  • Whatever His gifts and calling for you- it is hidden until you come to Jesus - will you be saved?
  • His purpose for your life is to be found in fellowship with other Christians - in His Church.
  • If you do not stay close to the Lord - even after being used of Him - you can become foolish- even like Solomon - so keep close to Him - be faithful.
