Archive of Pastor Darby's Sermon Notes, transcribed from his original typewritten documents

Some of the ink on the original document has smudged, making some portions of this document illegible. Rather than assume what Pastor Darby had typed and "fill in the blanks," we've chosen to just note these areas as "(illegible)".

CHARGE THAT TO MY ACCOUNT

Nov. 24, 1968 am

HERE IS A PASSAGE OF DIVINE REVELATION THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US THROUGH PERSONAL MAIL

  • Some of the greatest truths of Imputation and Substitution - basis of our salvation- here
  • This little book also shows us how God can be righteous and still offer peace to men Ps. 85:10
  • The mysterious principle of transforming society by transformed lives kills slavery here

We can trace in the history of the letter the grace of God in Imputation

I. THE HISTORY OF THE LETTER

The deeply moving human revelation of man's sin, and yet man's great love is unfolded.

A. PHILEMON, A WEALTHY HOUSEHOLDER AND FRIEND OF PAUL IN COLOSSE

  1. The head of a great house, where the church met, may servants, wealthy- some noble are called
  2. This man was a convert of Paul at some earlier time, Paul had never been in Colosse - Col 1
  3. But this is a man who is well known for his deeds of love, kindness, a real changed heart

B. ONESIMUS, A RUNAWAY SLAVE WHO HAD STOLEN FROM HIS MASTER AND FLED

  1. The name "Onesimus" means profitable, but he certainly was unprofitable to Philemon - v.11
  2. And as the fruit (illegible) he wound up in prison in Rome- just desert for his wickedness
  3. But Rom 8:23- God (illegible) take any circumstance and use it for glory if we let Him-

C. PAUL, THE PRISON(illegible) THAT WAS GOD'S MAN IN GOD'S PLACE TO DO GOD'S WILL

  1. He had been imprisoned for preaching the Gospel, and kept on doing so- won prisoners & jailers
  2. When he met Onesimus, he pointed the runaway slave to Jesus.  What a small world, much not said
  3. Paul sent Onesimus back to his master - but with a letter that God spoke through

Along with him the letters of Colossians and Ephesians were also sent- Cf Col 4:9

II. THE GRACE OF GOD SHOWN IN HUMAN HEARTS

In the 25 verses are pictures of many deep emotional experiences with the Lord

A. ONESIMUS HAD A DEBT TO PHILEMON; HE HAD TO GO BACK TO FACE THE WRONG HE HAD DONE

  1. When people are truly saved, their conscience begins to work in a sanctified way - shows God
  2. Salvation does not erase back debts, God does not forgive another's debts- settle with man!
  3. No man has a right to take another's property- whether slave or gold. Onesimus had to go back

B. PAUL HAD A DEBT TO ONESIMUS, FRIENDSHIP AND SON*SHIP IN THE FAITH LED PAUL TO HELP THIS SLAVE

  1. Paul the aged had begotten a son in his bonds- cf. v.10 - a new Christian needs guidance-
  2. Onesimus had ministered to Paul - v.13, and had been a real help standing by this apostle
  3. But without the permission of Philemon, Paul would not presume to keep Onesimus from right

C. PHILEMON HAD A DEBT TO PAUL, FOR HE TOO WAS A SON IN THE FAITH OF THE AGED APOSTLE

  1. Paul reminded Philemon of his debt v.19, yet not demanding of him. Only God can command.
  2. Paul pled with him for love's sake-v.9, to receive Onesimus- v.15,16 now as a brother
  3. Paul asks that the debt be charged to his own account-18 and promised to repay it - 19

Here is a perfect illustration of a great spiritual message and truth and principle:

III. THE PRINCIPLE OF IMPUTATION AND SUBSTITUTION

The world is filled with impossible things- here God makes justice and mercy kiss each other

A. "IF I AM YOUR PARTNER, RECIEVE HIM AS MYSELF" v.17

  1. Paul in prison wrote to Philemon the wealthy- so Christ from the flesh also asks of God
  2. Jesus came to this prison house of earth to make us God's Sons- John 1:12
  3. We now become partners with God- joint heirs with Jesus Christ- Rom 8:17

B. "IF HE OWES OUGHT, PUT THAT ON MY ACCOUNT" v.18

  1. The debt of Onesimus is nothing compared with our debt caused by our sin- theft from God
  2. Hymns "Jesus Paid It All", "All My Sins Are Gone", "Saved By The Blood of the Crucified One"
  3. From Justified by the Blood- Gen 4:7, to Washed in the Blood- Rev. 7:14, Jesus paid for us

C. "I PAUL HAVE WRITTEN IT WITH MINE OWN HAND, I WILL REPAY IT" v.19

  1. If it takes something more, Paul would do it, and so would Jesus- Come to Him- Not cast out!
  2. It is not light or easy- Jesus has paid the price for all our sins- Rom 5:8,9
  3. All He asks of us is to believe- like Abram- James 2:23 Trust Him and He will pay our way

If a man moved by the love of God will do this why can't we believe it of Jesus?

WILL YOU LET JESUS PAY THE PRICE OF YOUR REDEMPTION, AND GIVE YOU A CHANGED HEART?

  • Your own way has been what has gotten you into the prison house of sin- why not trust Him?
  • If you will confess Christ as your Saviour- He will pay the price for your redemption,
  • Along with this He will change your heart, where you will want to do right- do it now.
