The Coming New World

Eschatological study by Pastor Wesley Darby

THE COMING NEW WORLD - I

INTRO: In II Pet. 3 Holy Spirit records the fact of three worlds.  First is in Vs. 6, Second is in Vs. 7.  Third is in Vs. 13.  These three worlds related to the three tenses are the PAST world, the PRESENT world and the PROSPECTIVE world.

I. THE PAST WORLD

A. The past world was created by God - Vs. 5.

  1. God commanded and the world came into existence - Ps. 33:6,9.
  2. Nine times in Gen. 1 - "and God said", "and it was so."  Vs.3,6,9,11,14,20,24,26,29.
  3. No man was present to witness just how God did it - Heb. 11:3.
  4. II Pet. 3 teaches we are not to be surprised at the rise of scoffers & sceptics - Vs. 3,4.
    1. Their increase will characterize the last days.
    2. Their ignorance is "willful" - Vs. 5a.
    3. Many learned men are educated beyond their own intellect.
    4. True science is never out of harmony with what the Bible teaches.
  5. The Bible opens with ten simple words - Gen 1:1.
    1. The doctrine of creation by God according to the Bible is fundamental to historic Christianity, & this Scriptural record should settle the matter once & for all.

B. The past world was condemned by God. Vs. 6.

  1. Refers to flood of Noah's day - "overflowed" - katakluszo - cataclysm.
  2. Lord describes condition of men's minds & hearts in that world of Noah's day - Matt. 24:38,39.
    1. In spite of Noah's faithful preaching for 100 years, warning people, they were apathetic & indifferent to the coming judgment.
    2. They pursued the normal things of life - flood came & God judged the human race.
  3. Some critics have attacked the record of the flood as false because of word "perish".
    1. Perish here does not mean extinction or annihilation but rather loss of well being.
    2. Note in Jn. 3:16 - person who dies in unbelief is said to perish, meaning that he loses his eternal well being, Jn. 10:28, II Pet. 3:9.
  4. Just as surely as the earth was created by God, even so was it condemned by God by means of a watery judgment.
  5. The creation & judgment of the earth by God are essential as the foundation to the rest of this study.

THE COMING NEW WORLD - II

I. THE PRESENT WORLD IS A CONTEMPTUOUS WORLD - II Pet. 3:3,4.

A. Present world looks with scorn & ridicule upon the truths in God's Word..

  1. Aimed at idea of return of Christ & Judgment.
  2. Contempt for Word because it pronounces upon their way of life.

B. Such contempt for God & Word no new thing.

  1. Prevailed in Noah's day - Heb. 11:7.
    1. Noah's day - "Where is the flood you predict?"
    2. Peter's day - "Where is the promise of His Coming?"
    3. Note also - Mal. 2:17, Ps. 42:3, Jer. 17:15
  2. They are suggesting that God makes promises He does not keep.

C. Peter's response is a moving one.

  1. Man does not see time as God sees it - Vs. 8.
    1. Striking difference between the divine & human view-points of time.
  2. Any apparent slowness on God's part was an act of mercy.
    1. Vs. 9 - Any delay is to give sinners a chance to repent.
    2. Delay does not spring from any inability on God's part to carry out His promise, but instead that sinners should not perish.

II THE PRESENT WORLD IS A CONDEMNED WORLD - II Pet. 3:7.

A. This verse is sustained by accurate scientific discovery.

  1. The present heaven & earth  have in them a deposit of fire.
  2. No true scientist would deny this.

B. Who put it there and how & why is it maintained?

  1. II Pet. 3:5-7.
  2. By His word were all things created - Ps. 33:6,9.
  3. By His word are all things controlled - Heb. 1:3.
  4. By His word will the heavens & earth be condemned.

C. The God of the Bible is the God of the atom - Heb. 12:29.

  1. Note: Ps. 50:3, Isa. 29:6, Isa. 30:30, Isa. 66:15,16, Joel 2:30, Nahum 1:5,6, Mal. 4:1, Lk.17:28-30.  Christ supports the historicity of the fiery judgment.

D. Moses gives a vivid & scientifically accurate description of the Sodom incident - Gen. 19:23,24.

  1. When did the Lord rain upon Sodom & Gomorrah fire & brimstone out of heaven? - Vs. 23a.
  2. The sun is made up of atoms, a scientifically proven fact.
  3. God simply shook a few atoms on those wicked cities.

E. God promised Noah that there will never be another earth-wide flood - Gen. 9:8-11.

  1. We are assured by God that He will judge and purge the present world with fire.

III. GOD'S ORDER OF FUTURE EVENTS

  1. Rapture of the church - 1 Thes. 4:13-18.
  2. Tribulation on the earth - Dan. 9:24-27.
  3. Millennial reign of Christ - Rev. 20:1-7.
  4. Great White Throne judgment - Rev. 20:11-15
  5. Renovation of the earth by fire - II Pet. 3:10.

THE COMING NEW WORLD - III

  2. Present world is moving toward a judgment by fire, II Pet. 3:13.
  3. Fire will one day melt the heavens & earth and a new heavens & a new earth will arise, Rev. 21:1.

B. This great burning & melting of the earth speaks of purification not annihilation.

  1. Note: Matt. 24:35 & II Cor. 5:17.
  2. Jesus & Paul only used word "regeneration" once.
    1. It means "a new order".
  3. Lord used it in reference to a physical new order in the earth - Matt. 19:28
  4. Paul used it in connection with a spiritual new order in the life of the believing sinner - Tit. 3:5.

C. In neither instance is obliteration, annihilation extinction or cessation of being even inferred.

  1. It means a purging & purifying of the old sinful order & the bringing in of the new.

II. THE PROSPECTIVE WORLD IS PURIFIED BY GOD - II Pet. 3:13b

A. The present world is vividly described in Gal. 1:4.

  1. Contrast this with what John saw in Rev. 21:27.
  2. In the present world righteousness is subdued & evil reigns.
  3. In the prospective world righteousness will reign & evil will be done away.
  4. "Dwelleth" means "to be permanently at home".
  5. There is very little right in present world.

B. Rev. 21:4 0- this one verse is a sermon in itself

  1. "God shall wipe aware all tears from their eyes".
    1. Tears recall sorrows, heartaches, etc.
    2. Prospective worlds will be a tearless world.

        1. When the new world is established, He will have locked the door that shuts out death forever.
  3. "Neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain".
    1. Grief, mourning, lamentation & all distress will be done away.
    2. New world will be so wonderful that we will never again give thought to the present world in which we live.
