SILVER AND GOLD - OR - RISE UP AND WALK

Feb 14, 1965 am

PETER AND JOHN STARTED OUT FOR A PRAYER MEETING- AND NEVER ARRIVED!

Here is a story of a man who sought the cheapest of all gifts, and received the two best gifts. In our age when materialism claims so much attention, we need to look again to what God values. In Acts 3, a man sought a gift, the apostles gave him the better gift, and many received the very best gift in one fast scene.

A POOR MAN SOUGHT A GIFT (ACTS 3:2)

THIS MAN HAD A PROBLEM (2a)

Luke the Physician writes about the problem, and its origin- the miracle of birth- defect. So lame was the man that he had to be carried, and his job was to big for alms. Much of the world today is lame, halt, blind, physically, mentally, by nature, others, self.

THIS MAN BEGGED ALMS AT THE DOOR OF THE TEMPLE (2b)

Lame, but not dumb- he chose the best place to beg alms--- the gate of the temple called Beautiful. At 3:00 PM, the time of the daily sacrifice, time of prayer, the Jews swarmed into worship. The gate to prayer ought to be Beautiful but too many are begging outside the gate.

THIS MAN SAW PETER AND JOHN AND ASKED A GIFT (3)

Two men, well clothed- one a merchant, the other a theologian- going to prayer- should give. Peter fastened his eyes on him- said "Look on us"- the man expected a gift. I want any Pharisees present to notice that Peter and John missed prayer meeting- and any Sadducees present to notice that it wasn't to stay at home and loaf.

THE APOSTLES CHOSE TO GIVE THE BETTER GIFT (Acts 3:6)

"Silver and gold have I none," Peter replied.   Peter had not been poor- houses, fishing business- and in Acts he traveled some. But all he had was given to the Lord long before Acts 2:44,45- they had the church treasury-. John later wrote (I John 3:17-18) but it is not God's purpose to feed all the poor.

"BUT SUCH AS I HAVE I GIVE THEE"

The wealth of Peter and John, all their possessions, and their very persons- given to Jesus. And like Matthew 6:21 and following, they had much treasure in heaven, and rich gifts from God. The man's real need was not a few coins- but his limbs that money could not buy.

IN THE NAME OF JESUS OF NAZARETH RISE UP AND WALK!

All Peter and John had was deposited in Jesus' name, now look what Jesus does in return. Now rise up and walk- an impossible miracle- Luke the author knew! Immediately this man was healed- he didn't come to his feet asking for coins either!

THEN GOD GAVE THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL

5,000 became believers- received the gift of eternal salvation.

THE PEOPLE RAN TO SEE THE MIRACLE

Here is the reason Peter did not say rise to heaven- the reason everyone is not healed. This was an unusual miracle- and caused the man to praise God- not common to be taken for granted. The people had their attention caught- and now could be offered the great gift.

PETER OFFERED TO ALL THE GREATEST OF ALL GIFTS (Acts 3: 19)

  • Repent verse 14 and 15- Ye denied him, killed the Prince of life-- Gentiles- Solomon's porch - Jews- accused by Peter-
  • Be converted- 16- faith in Christ made the manhole- you used to be ignorant- now believe
  • That your sins may be blotted out- the greater bondage than lame feet-

THAT SO MAY COME TIMES OF REFRESHING FROM THE FACE OF THE LORD- (19b)

I'd rather have Jesus than alms- he is more refreshing- do you have the cleanliness - forgiven? I'd rather have Jesus than healing- he is stronger - do you have resurrection body promised? Your greatest need is this greatest gift- without it health and wealth are soap bubbles!

DON'T YOU SETTLE FOR RAGS WHEN YOU CAN HAVE RICHES IN GLORY.

  • Repent- he died for your sins- your sins killed him - repentance- not sorrow for getting caught but that you sinned.
  • Be converted- put your personal faith in Jesus Christ- confess him.
  • Place your life and efforts in God's hands as Peter and John did.
