GREAT JOY AND GREAT SORROW WERE STRANGELY MIXED AT THE PASSOVER SUPPER, THE LAST SUPPER OF OUR LORD
1. In the upper room on Mt. Zion, some of our Lord's greatest teaching on Love- also on betrayal
2. The sequence of events is hard to place- compare various harmonies- but message goes to heart
3. Let's not be turned from the great Love, Betrayal, Amazing Grace- so that we can walk as Sinners saved by Grace, Walk carefully not to betray the Lord -always encouraged by Jesus
I.- JESUS WAS TROUBLED IN SPIRIT John 13:21
Jesus had instructed them in Humility- using the object lesson of the foot-washing
A.- "WHEN JESUS HAD THUS SAID, HE WAS TROUBLED IN SPIRIT AND TESTIFIED AND SAID" John 13:21a
1. In Him urging them to follow His Example of service v. 15, He gave road of happiness v.17
2. But as He reflects on choosing them- He remembers a scripture-Ps 41:9 eat bread...lift up heel...
3. A wave of sorrow swept over His countenance- deep, into His Spirit- He was troubled!-
B.- "AS THEY SAT EATING JESUS SAID, VERILY ONE OF YOU SHALL BETRAY ME." Mark 14:18, Mat. 26:21
1. The thoughts of the scripture were applied directly by Jesus- and we need to let Bible speak
2. The stern announcement troubled the hearts of those with Him - the meeting took on a cloud
3. God has pre-judged sin, and announced His Judgement -it is our act that condemns us-not Him!
C.- THE SON OF MAN INDEED GOETH AS IT HATH BEEN DETERMINED, BUT WOE UNTO THAT MAN... BETRAYED- Luke 22:21
1. The destiny of the Lord was to be betrayed, and crucified, but God did not force men to do it
2. It did not have to be Judas; the others did not have to betray him, NOR DO WE TODAY! But we do
3. There are some sins- great, some small- but all by our own act, thought, or mood- we don't have to
If you really know the Lord- you will be troubled at the sin of our time -you don't have to join
II.- ONE OF YOU SHALL BETRAY ME
The word of God is sharp, quick, powerful- striking right at the very heart of our sinfulness
A.- "THEY BEGAN TO BE EXCEEDING SORROWFUL" - Matt 26:22 THEIR BICKERING TURNED TO SOUL SEARCHING
1. When God speaks of heartbreak and sin- you had better listen- & be touched- you have a choice
2. The broken heart He will always heal and bind up with his Love- unless you fight Him
3. If we had the ability to bear heartache & sorrow today- we might avoid a lot of sin-
B.- WOE UNTO THAT MAN, GOOD IT WERE FOR HIM IF HE HAD NOT BEEN BORN - Mark 14:21,Matt 26:14
1. Woe for offenses- but they shall come! You will be betrayed by every man- so look to Jesus!
2. But you don't have to betray others- you have a choice... Be faithful.. Be true... repentance...
3. But when Jesus said this- Judah had already agreed on the price!- We make provision for sin!
C.- "LORD, WHO IS IT" John 13:25,6 "THE ONE WHOM I SHALL GIVE THE SOP!"
1. Understand the arrangement of the feast- U shaped table, reclining around it, oriental style
2. Peter (at foot) signaled John- at bosom of Jesus- and John asked- but did not understand-
3. Judas was at the left of Jesus- and Jesus dipped the sap- gave to him- symbol of greatest love
With the special love shows Judas had to repent- or step into Hell's open mouth - He chose!
III.- THEY ALL ASKED "IS IT I, LORD?"
Men of conscience will be pricked, and will search their souls, but Satan's man covered up
A.- THEY ALL ASKED THE SAME QUESTION, SELF EXAMINATION, FEAR, BUT ONE WAS A HYPOCRITE!
1. I believe every man will betray the Lord- Some in small things-, some in great things. You?
2. When the disciples asked they had self distrust- religious privilege's do not secure you
3. But when Judas asked "Master, Is it I"- he did so to cover up- Matt 26:25 -a single vice!
B.- WHAT ARE THE DEGREES OF BETRAYAL, AND WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE? John 13:37-8 -Peter
1. Some men betray him with Intellect- (doubts), some our nature (animal?), or silence, -absence
2. A teacher can betray by destroying moral faith of child- unfair advantage, -Try Milton,
3. A Church member can betray the Lord by not being faithful, not carrying fair share to your call
C.- JESUS WARNED PETER ABOUT A COCK CROWING, FOR WHOM DOES THE COCK CROW TODAY?
1. Peter was sure he would die for the Lord, but Jesus faced him with the facts- was he unkind?
2. Face facts again- You too will be betrayed, and will betray! -Keep a tender heart to Jesus!
3. When Peter heard- he wept- Luke 22:62, But when Jesus gave sop-Judas went on to infamy!
The Apostles all said "Even if I must die with thee, I will not deny thee-" Mark 14:31 -they did
WHEN GOD SENDS YOU A REMINDER, - A COCK CROWING, OR THE OFFER OF A FAVOR, WILL YOU HARDEN OR REPENT?
1. Adam hid in the Garden- when the Lord called- he answered "I'm hiding Lord" -Are you?
2. When Nathan spoke for God to David - "Thou art the Man"- David said "I have sinned"
3. When God called Isaiah- -he said "Woe is me"- but also "Here Am I Lord- Send Me!"
