 Luke 4:14-32, Isa 61:1,2

GUEST SPEAKER, JESUS

Jan 28, 1973 am

Read before message- Luke 4:21

THERE WAS A GUEST SPEAKER IN THE SYNAGOGUE, A BOY FROM THE TOWN WHO HAD MADE GOOD ELSEWHERE- JESUS

1. He had performed miracles in Cana, they knew of Jerusalem-John 4:45, He came in power -Luke 4:14
2. Jesus healed a nobleman's son- Jn. 4:46ff, and then came to His own town-Nazareth- Mat. 2:23
3. Strange - He cut up a verse, the home town folks almost killed Him,- all over a sermon

We need to know why- lest we also miss His love & grace- and He do no mighty work here!

I.- THE SCRIPTURE WAS CHOSEN Luke 4:16-19 & Isa 61:1,2

"As was His custom" -He did not miss church! "Stood up to read"- sign of respect for the Bible

A.- "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE HATH ANOINTED ME" -DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST

A marvelous picture of the trinity- To us, we can do nothing without anointing,-this was special

B.- "TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR", or "GOOD TIDINGS TO THE MEEK" - JESUS THE EVANGELIST!

The wounds of the heart because of sin- oppression, sorrow! We need Him instead of men's schemes

C.- "TO HEAL THE BROKEN HEARTED" - "BIND UP" SHOWING JESUS AS THE GREAT PHYSICIAN, HEALER, MIRACLE WORKER

Good news- not judgement; to save, not condemn; to the poor & meek, not haughty or proud.

D.- "TO PREACH DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVE", "PROCLAIM LIBERTY" - JESUS IS THE GREAT LIBERATOR!

Liberty is of God, slavery of Satan; Oppression and Christ cannot mix- He will set things right

E.- "RECOVERING OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND" Not in Isa 61:1,2, but Ps 146:8, Isa. 29:18- REVEALER OF LIGHT

Only Christ can open the eyes of men to God's will & purpose- even Bible is hidden to the unsaved

F.- "TO SET AT LIBERTY THEM THAT ARE BRUISED" or "OPENING OF PRISON TO BOUND" -JESUS THE PARDONER

A lot of bondage is our own fault- sin, corruption,-only Christ can pardon us, forgive us, save us

G.- "TO PREACH THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD" TO PROCLAIM THE YEAR OF JUBILEE YEAR OF GRACE

All debts forgiven, all land returned, bond slaves freed,- All things made right with God!

And Jesus stopped, closed the Book, and sat down - the custom to preach & answer questions

II.- JESUS PREACHED HIS SERMON !

A.- "HE BEGAN TO SAY" v. 21 "THIS DAY IS THIS SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS -GRACIOUS WORDS

1. Jesus by this expression claimed to be their Messiah; it took time, but they recognized it.
2. The application of this scripture is also due today! Heb. 3:7,8 -If you harden not your heart
3. They wondered at His gracious words- v.22b, not harsh like the scribes - but with authority

B.- THEY SAID " IS THIS NOT JOSEPH'S SON?" 22c FAMILIARITY OFTEN KEEPS US FROM SEEING GOD'S GLOW

1. Jesus knew their hearts- John 2:24, could see what they thought, so v.23 spoke plainly to them
2. He gave them a proverb v.24- yet many prophets have had to go to their own people, land, town
3. He gave them 2 Biblical illustrations- Could 27c reference to Gentile be a trigger - prejudice?

C.- THEY WERE FILLED WITH WRATH, V. 28, AND TRIED TO LEAD HIM OUT OF THE CITY TO KILL HIM

1. The people were known as riotous John 1:46,-but still mystery as to why suddenly mad to kill Jesus
2. Today many want ears soothed - get easily angry with preacher- even if he uses gracious words
3. They tried the long brow of Hill- like trial by ordeal; -Guilty only if the 40ft fall hurt!

We have another mystery- how He blinded their eyes, and walked through the midst of them.

III.- JESUS MISSED PART OF THE TEXT !

Why did Jesus stop in the middle of a verse? Check carefully, and know the rest is coming soon

A.- THIS INVOLVES THE PRINCIPLE OF THE GAP- YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THIS TO KNOW BIBLICAL PROPHECY

1. Great mountain peaks of prophecy are seen in distance- when you get there you see valleys between
2. The 1st part of verse was fulfilled in their ears- His 1st advent- he came to Save, deliver
3. But the rest of the verse is about ready to be fulfilled now- Study well -Great Tribulation

B.- THE NEXT PHRASE OF THE VERSE - ISA 61:2b IS "THE DAY OF VENGEANCE OF OUR GOD"

1. John 1:17 plainly tells us that Grace & Truth came by Jesus Christ- Law by Moses
2. But the Day of vengeance is yet on its way to arrive suddenly! When men say peace- I Th 5:3 - Vengeance.
3. The horrors of the Tribulation frighten people- A little Hell on earth-prelude for main event

C.- THE LAST PHRASE Isa 61:2c is "TO COMFORT ALL THAT MOURN" -FINAL EDITION OF BLESSED HOPE

1. This is fulfilled in Rev. 21:4 - When God shall wipe away all tears, precious, wonderful then
2. This prophecy is called Heaven- & will be wonderful if you will get ready by believing Jesus
3. The other cities of Israel believed Jesus and saw many wonderful works - will you believe?

Jesus will finish this verse- but now is hour of grace.  Will you let Him do work in your heart?

JESUS IS COMING INTO THE SYNAGOGUE OF YOUR HEART TO SPEAK TO YOU, WILL YOU LISTEN, AND BELIEVE?

1. Whatever your spiritual needs- He is ready- Evangelist, Healer, Liberator, Light-giver
2. If you will let Him- He will declare this YOUR year of JUBILEE! Will you accept Him?
3. Jesus wants you to walk with Him- Baptism, Church Membership; not up mountain to destruction-but with love!
