INTRODUCTION - JESUS PREACHED A SERMON IN HIS HOME TOWN, AND THE RESULTS WERE ALMOST CATASTROPHIC !

• From His temptation- He returned 4:14 preaching in Power, about 30 years of age-3:23
• But when He came to His own town Matt 2;23 -where He was raised, He had a different reception
• Strange - He cut a verve up, & the home folks almost killed Him. all over a sermon-

We need to know why, lest we miss His love and grace as they did- no mighty works there!

I. THE SCRIPTURE JESUS CHOSE - Luke 4:14-32, Isa 61:1,2

He did not miss church!, "Stood up to read”- sign of respect for Scroll

A.  "THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE HATH ANNOINTED ME" - THE DEITY OF JESUS CHRIST!

1. A marvelous picture of Trinity to us, we can do nothing without anointing, but this was special

B.  "TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR" - or "GOOD TIDINGS TO THE MEEK - JESUS the Evangelist!

1. Good news - not judgement; to save, not condemn; to the poor and meek, not haughty or proud

C.  "TO HEAL THE BROKEN HEARTED"- "BIND UP" showing Jesus as the Great Physician - healer - miracle worker

1. The wounds of the heart because of sin - oppression, sorrow; we need Him

D.  "PREACH DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVE" "PROCLAIIM LIBERTY" and Jesus is the great Liberator!

1. Liberty is of God, slavery of Satan - oppression and Christ cannot mix - He will set things right

E.  "RECOVERING OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND" - not in Isa 61:1,2, but Ps 146:8, Isa 29:18 AS REVEALER OF LIGHT

1. Only Christ can open the eyes of men to God's will and Purpose - even the Bible itself is hidden

F.  "TO SET AT LIBERTY THEM THAT ARE BRUISED" OR "OPENING OF PRISON TO BOUND" - JESUS THE PARDONER

1. A lot of our bondage is our own fault- sin, corrupt hear - only Christ can pardon us - forgive us

G.  "TO PREACH THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD" - to proclaim the YEAR OF JUBILEE - YEAR OF GRACE

1. All debts forgiven, all land returned, bond slaves freed, things made right with God

II.  THE SERMON JESUS PREACHED - Luke 4:20-30 - Sat down to teach- authority

A.  "HE BEGAN TO SAY " - "THIS DAY IS THIS SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS". v.21

1. Jesus by this expression claimed to be their Messiah, and though it took time, they recognized it
2. The application of this scripture is also applicable TODAY!  Heb 3:7,8 - If you harden not your heart
3. They wondered at His gracious words- v.22b, not harsh like scribes, not fire and brimstone-

B.  THEY SAID "IS NOT THIS JOSEPH'S SON?" 22c Familiarity often keeps us from seeing the glow of God

1. Jesus knew their hearts - John 2:24 - so He could see what they thought - v.23 - and spoke plainly
2. He gave them a proverb - v. 24 - yet many prophets have had to go to their own people, land, town!
3. He gave them two Biblical illustrations - could 27c reference to Gentiles be a trigger - prejudice?

C.  THEY WERE FILLED WITH WRATH v.28 AND TRIED THEIR BEST TO KILL HIM 29 & 30

1. The people were known as riotous - John 1:46 - but still a mystery as to why the so suddenly had had enough
2. Yet today!  If you think Preacher in flesh- don't join him; and if he is too strong, wait and grow!
3. But the long brow of the hill - south of city; like Trial by Ordeal; guilty if the fall hurt!

It is a great mystery how He blinded their eyes and escaped through their midst!

III.  THE REST OF THE VERSE HE SKIPPED!  Check Is 61:2b

Why did Jesus stop in the middle of a sentence and not finish the verse? Check carefully!

A.  THIS INVOLVES THE PRINCIPLE OF THE GAP! - YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THIS TO UNDERSTAND BIBLE PROPHECY

1. Great mountain peaks of prophesy are seen in distance-when you get there you see valleys between!
2. The 1st part of this verse was fulfilled in their eyes - in his first advent- He came to save
3. But the rest of this verse covers the great tribulation, the final judgment, and heaven

B.  THE NEXT PHRASE OF THE VERSK IS "THE DAY OF VENGEANCE OF OUR GOD" Isa 61:20

1. John 1:17 plainly tells us that the law was by Moses, & Grace & Truth by Jesus Christ!
2. But the Day of Vengeance is still on its way! & will arrive suddenly- I Thes 5:3 -men say peace - LeMay- death
3. Does a little HELL ON EARTH frighten you? Tribulation is but a warm up for main event - HELL ETERNALLY

C.  THE LAST PHRASE IS "TO COMFORT ALL THAT MOURN" - Isa 61:20 - This is the final "Blessed Hope"

1. This is fulfilled in Rev 21:4 when God shall wipe away all tears, precious, wonderful time
2. This prophecy is called Heaven & if you will get ready, you can have some today! In Christ
3. Other cities of Israel believed Jesus- and saw many wonderful works- will you believe today?

Jesus will finish this verse! Vengeance is next!, but there is still time for Grace today.

CONCLUSION - WILL WOU LET JESUS CHRIST SPEAK TO YOUR HEART RIGHT NOW? HE IS ALIVE, WHISPERING TO YOU!

1. Whatever your spiritual needs are- He has the help -  Evangelist, Healer, Liberator, Light giver!
2. If you will let Him - He will declare this YOUR year of Jubilee! Will you accept Him?
3. To walk with Jesus involves not only Salvation- but Baptism, Church Membership, and Friendship

Jesus wants you to walk with Him, not up the mountain to destruction, but as a friend!
