TONIGHT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT MY OWN FAMILY, THOSE WHO BELIEVE THE BIBLE, FUNDAMENTALISTS!

1. Jesus called men to serve Him- and sent them out; but they came back as bickering pups
2. We need a clean call to Salvation, and Service- & we need to quit muddying the call- weakness
3. We need the Power of the Lord- believing the Fundamentals of the Faith- but we need to avoid the 8 pitfalls these disciples fell into in this one Chapter alone - count them

I.- THE PITFALL OF BRAGGING ABOUT THEMSELVES Luke 9:10 -THEY CAME BACK WITH BIG "I'S"

1. Their eyes were on their accomplishment-s Devils were subject unto them- they felt high
2. They were boasting of what they had done -robbed God of Glory; grieved Holy Spirit, wrong
3. Jesus took them to desert place-/later 10:20 he rebuked them the 2nd time- Name in Lamb's book?

II.- THE PITFALL OF SELF PITY, AND FAILURE TO TRUST THE LORD - Luke 9:12- A HUNGRY MULTITUDE

1. They could not stand to rough it in the desert place- In Arizona, we have many small churches
2. The desert place is precious- God uses it to teach us to pray, trust, and be faithful- Clifton
3. Here Jesus fed the 5,000; but the disciples would have missed it -We have a big God- trust

III.- THE PITFALL OF LAZINESS v. 32- THE GREATEST TIME OF GLORY ON THE MOUNTAINTIP & THEY SLEPT

1. Jesus took his best disciples to the Mt. of Transfiguration- and they went asleep-
2. They wanted then to stay and build tabernacles - take short cut to heaven- really living high
3. They were not grieved with the affliction of Israel - they were needed below but wanted heights

IV.- THE PITFALL OF UNBELIEF Luke 9:40,41 - THEIR PRAYERLESSNESS, AND LACK OF FAITH

1. Jesus had left some disciples behind to tend to the people - but they were suddenly powerless
2. The reason-Mark 9:29 -only by prayer; & Matt 17:20- ye of little faith! Disciples ?
3. At least the father-Mark 9:24 asked the Lord "I believe Lord help thou mine unbelief"

V.- THE PITFALL OF PREEMINANCE Luke 9:46 THE FAVORITE ARGUMENT OF POLITICIANS -

1. As Jesus moved toward His death- they were playing party politics - Non-Convention at that!
2. The Pecking order of preachers- worse than in hen-house; doesn't take big church for cliques-
3. Jesus rebuked them with one of most famous texts- v.48- like a little child- No D.D.I's

VI.- THE PITFALL OF PREJUDICE Luke 9:49 - THEY SAW A FELLOW WHO WAS NOT OF THEIR STRIPE -

1. they were clannish- no one but their group had the right to preach Jesus- Conv.-Anti-Conv.
2. The other guy was not their kind of Baptist, not from their school, or maybe saw Graham m(illegible)
3. Jesus declared one of His paradoxes- v.50, contrast Matt 12:30 -Family/& out of Family truth

Many Bible truths are for inside the family--or outside the family of faith

VII.- THE PITFAL OF TEMPERMENT - Luke 9:54 -THEY WANTED TO CALL FIRE DOWN ON SAMARITANS

1. They were heading to Jerusalem, the Samaritans didn't like it- & refused to receive them
2. The disciples were spoiled, and angry- they wanted fire to devour those who did not help them
3. Jesus rebuked them- v. 56- He came not to destroy but build!- some today tear churches up

VIII.- THE PITFALL OF WORLDLY DESIRES Luke 9:61-2 SOME HAD A CHANCE TO BECOME DISCIPLES- BUT!

1. Jesus wanted these two to follow him- but they had things in the world - wanted it
2. Jesus gave them the acid test of discipleship- Hand to plough, but looking back at boys who were going swimming! Many want best of God's world- and this world's treasure too
3. Jesus has promised to reward those who leave anything behind for or Him- but we lack faith

I WANT YOU TO BELIEVE IN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE FAITH, BUT PLEASE MISS THESE PITFALLS

1. Know the Lord in a sweet and precious way- You are nothing- It is Jesus that Saves!
2. Accept His call to service- no greater joy than serving Him- He is your constant strength
3. Never look back at cares of the world- they don't help in Eternity! -
